  1. What is the Firefly's Glow list for? top of the page

The Firefly's Glow list is for Firefly fanfiction, of all types, gen, het and slash, all pairings, all ratings and for discussion about the show and any Firefly fanfiction, public feedback and recommendations, requests for beta, and update announcements for fanfic websites or mailing lists. You're also welcome to post an intro about yourself when you join the list.

There's also the FG-Fiction list which is the fiction only version, only stories, no discussion. Check the Mailing Lists page for details.

Two types of fanfiction are not allowed: real people fic, stories written about the real actors, not their characters and stories involving underage sex (any sexual act beyond kissing where one partner is younger than sixteen years old)

  2. What is the Firefly's Glow archive for? top of the page

The Firefly's Glow archive is for Firefly fanfiction, of all types, gen, het and slash, all pairings, all ratings. Any story posted to the Firefly's Glow list or the FG-Fiction list will be archived here unless otherwise noted in the story.

Again, two types of fanfiction are not allowed: real people fic, stories written about the real actors, not their characters and stories involving underage sex (any sexual act beyond kissing where one partner is younger than sixteen years old)

  3. What about discussion of episodes? top of the page

Episode discussion is more than welcome, but please remember to use spoilers until the episode has aired on the US west coast (that's 8pm US Pacific or 11pm US eastern). Please also use spoilers for any news articles or tv guide info (print or online) that discloses any info about unaired episodes.

To mark a post with spoilers, put "Spoilers:" in the subject line and DON'T put revealing things in the subject, like, don't put "Mal dies!" in the subject, do put something like "9/27 ep". Then put spoiler space in the body of your email, 15 to 20 lines, put a * or a letter on each line since some email programs eliminate blank lines. You may also want to include spoiler warnings in your story headers, but it is not required.

  4. What are the fanfic posting guidelines? top of the page

Here's sample story headers to put at the beginning of your story:

    Title:
    Author:
    Feedback email:
    Rating: (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17)
Genre: (gen, het or slash) Characters:
    Pairings: (if any)
Warnings: (about things like character death, violence, language or sexual content) Spoilers: (give names of eps or seasons)
    Archive Permission:
    Author Notes:
    Disclaimer:
    Summary:

The only required items are Title and Author, everything else is optional. However, some readers really appreciate more information and especially appreciate knowing what genre the story is: Gen is like the show in tone, language and romantic/sexual content, Het is more focused on a male/female relationship, either one portrayed openly in the show or one the author envisions, Slash is more focused on a male/male, female/female or threesome that may or may not be portrayed in the show.

  5. How do I get my stories included? top of the page

Submit your story thru the Upload Story form. You can also select the option to post your story to the Firefly's Glow lists and you don't need to be a member of the lists to post your story.

For help in properly formatting your story to upload to the archive and/or post to the lists, check out the Upload Help page.

  6. Is there an archive for posts? top of the page

You can read and search for old posts at Yahoo!Groups and at GoogleGroups (the current home of the Firefly's Glow list).

  7. What's the links section? top of the page

The links are a database of Firefly-related links here at the archive. Anyone may submit a link and the archivist will check it out to make sure it's a working site (not a lot of dead links or under construction pages) and then add it to the links pages. Please do submit any Firefly links that you find, since the show is new, there will be new websites popping up and we want to help everyone find them!

  8. How do I find the stories? top of the page

You can go to the quick search links on the home page of the archive. The quick search pages are instantly updated whenever a story is added to the archive. Click on Last 7 Days or Last 30 Days fore recent stories or click on a fandom that interests you or use the Author and Title links further down the page to find the stories you're looking for.

  9. How do I unsubscribe? How do I change my settings to web-read only? top of the page

To unsubscribe, visit your "My Groups" page at Google Groups or you can send an e-mail to: fireflysglow-unsubscribe@googlegroups.com and then be sure to reply to the confirmation email that Google Groups sends.

To change your settings, go to your "My Groups" page at Google Groups and change your delivery option to "No Mail/Web Only", "Digest" or back to "Individual Emails". This option is handy for vacations, folks who read the list at work, and those with limited time or mailbox capacity.

  10. Why can't I post HTML or DOC files to the archive or list? top of the page

You can only post text files because there are limits on webspace and bandwidth. Furthermore, allowing HTML files would drastically decrease the ability to navigate the archive since all the links to the archive will not be added to the top or bottom of an uploaded HTML file. Only allowing text files increases navigation, readability, and keeps file sizes to a minimum. In addition, some mailing lists don't allow HTML and all that fancy formatting would be stripped out.

Plain text is simply the best, it's the most universally accepted format, it's easiest for the archive and the archivist to deal with, thus ensuring that more people get to read your story and tell you how brilliant it is!

  11. Can I link to the Firefly's Glow Archive? top of the page

Sure! Link buttons and banners for the archive are available here.

    Linking guidelines:

You are welcome to link to the home page of The Firefly's Glow Archive (http://firefly.populli.org/). I urge you NOT to link directly to the stories because I may move them or change file names at any time without warning or notice and your link will go dead.

Please do NOT link to the Posting Interface, Search Engine, or any results of a specific search, this could cause bandwidth problems for the archive that could result in the archive being closed. Be kind to your archivist!

  12. What if I need something changed in my archived story? top of the page

If you notice an error of some kind in the story here at the archive or wish to replace the story with a newer copy, you must contact the Archivist and your story will be deleted so that you can upload the revised version.

  13. I used the Posting Interface to e-mail my story to myself and it didn't arrive. What could be the problem? top of the page

Hotmail accounts (and other e-mail accounts) often have bulk e-mail filters in place. Hotmail (etc.) might think the e-mail the archive sends to you is junk mail. Please check your junk mail folders for your story before contacting the Archivist.

  14. How do I contact the list admin or archivist? top of the page

You can read the list admin at fireflysglow-owner@yahoogroups.com. You can reach the archivist thru the Contact page here at the archive.

  15. What do I do if I still have questions or need help with something else? top of the page

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the Archivist.
